​ Samuel de Champlain

He explored the St. Lawrence River for France. Champlain was the founder of the city and trading post of Quebec. He also defended Quebec aginst English attack.external image 225px-Samuel-de-champlain-s.jpg

In 1603 he accompanied an expedetion that ventured across the St. Lawrence River. The expedition was hoping th find a passageway, called the Northwest Passage. The Northwest Passage was suppost to be a waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean.

In 1608 Champlain founded Quebec, a French colony on the St. Lawrence River. Beavers fur was sold for huge profits in Europe, so Huron Indians trapped the beavers and traded the furs for European goods. Quebec quickly developed into a thriving trading center.
